Gadgets For Kids

Posted on 17 February 2008 by admin

Why leave kids out of the gadgets craze? I mean, today’s youngsters know more about technology than a lot of adult consumers. They are using computers at younger ages, learning to operate more complex toys and equipment, and their demands for gadget goodness have opened up a new world for entrepreneurs who have responded skillfully to the new market. As a result, lots of adult gadgets now have kid-friendly counterparts.

Take the media realm, for example. Personal cassette players are a thing of the past. Youngsters use a wide variety of mp3 players and radio headphones to listen to their tunes. In the seeming quest of today’s youth to never be farther than a few feet away from a television screen, personal DVD players have erupted onto the scene, becoming more and more affordable each year. Handheld electronics are also gaining steadily in consumer popularity among the 18-and-under set. Every major video game console manufacturer has developed a portable counterpart.

Cutting edge toys like Robosapien, a robot that can interact with its environment, make Barbie dolls look like a pet rock. Helicopters and hovercraft can now be powered by remote control. Even kids shoes have gotten a gadget upgrade with the addition of wheels in the soles.

Some adult gadgets have gotten a kid makeover as children continue to increase in number as consumers of technology. Take Firefly Mobile, for example, the company that first made the cell phone accessible to young children. And I mean young. These phones don’t even have keypads that might not be able to be used by children too young to read. Instead, they have keys with pictures of a woman for calling Mom and a man for calling Dad. Green means call and red means hang up. Typical black, white, or gray memory sticks have been revamped to appeal to kids, now available in bright colors, and shapes like soccer balls and VW Beetles. Perhaps one of the most outrageous kid-adaptations is the Blueberry. Modeled after RIM’s wildly successful Blackberry, this PDA marketed for children comes in colors like blueberry, gooseberry, and grapeberry and is suggested for use by children ages five and up. No more hassle trying to remember when nap time is, or what time to meet at the sandbox for your play date!

Other technology meant for kids is helpful to the adults that care for them. The Verichip is one of several chips the size of a grain of rice that can be planted in a child’s backpack, or more controversially, just under the skin, to give the exact location of a child at any time. Programs like Net Nanny install internet parental controls that monitor children’s use of the internet, including what sites they may visit and how long they are allowed to spend online. There is also software that will send parents copies of all email sent and received by their children. To put it simply, Big Brother is watching little brother and sister.

In these days of high-tech gadgets, there are plenty of companies clamoring for a piece the growing market of underage consumers. They may still “oooh” and “ahhh” over your average toy store spread, but today, children are asking “Can I have that?” just as often in your local gadget store.

Valentine’s Gadgets That Say “I Love You”

Posted on 07 February 2008 by admin

February 14th is just around the corner, and I know what you are thinking. Guys, you plan to give a special lady (whether it’s your significant other, your mom, or your secretary) the same tired V-day gifts you give every year. Girls, are you really looking forward with Christmas Day anticipation to a dozen roses that will be dead in a week, or a box of chocolates that will be gone by sundown? Sure, you can excuse your lack of creativity with the “It’s tradition” philosophy, but really, don’t you think that Valentine’s Day would be more special with a thoughtful and trendy gift that says “Look what I have and you don’t!” Consider bringing Casanova into the 21st century with these gadget-lovers’ gems.

Mailbug email

It is said that St. Valentine wrote the very first Valentine’s Day letter, but I bet he would have sent an email if he’d had the chance. Go for a gadget that will help make it easier for her to access email no matter where she is. It’s time to bring Valentine’s Day gift ideas from antique to chic.

Noise-eliminating earbuds

These sleek, sexy gadgets by Etymotic Research are perfect for the woman who has everything. They are super comfortable and deliver mind-blowing quality (this is my second pair…alas I left the others in the seat pocket on a flight last year

. They work with almost every electronic listening device including iPod, mp3 players, CD, portable DVD, PSP, and PCs. Another thing she’ll really like is they cancel out noise so well she won’t be able to hear you talking!

Unlocked Quad Band RAZR

With more than 2 billion of Earth’s residents toting cell phones, chances are that your Valentine has your digits stored in one. Smarten up and get your Valentine a cell phone she can use while you two are soaking up the rays in Barbados or strolling through the cobblestone streets of Venice, hand in hand. That’s right – with an unlocked quad band phone, you can travel the world with your sweetie and stay connected. You just have to buy her a SIM chip when you land…a “Welcome to Italy gift.” You’re just full of surprises!

Several companies have branched out with beautiful and feature-packed luxury phones that would make any gabber gadget-crazy. Vertu, a British-based manufacturer, is one of the best-known companies pioneering the luxury cell phone phenomenon. Vertu is the Rolls Royce of cell phones. Some models use gold accents or pavé diamonds.

An amazing screen protector is made by Vertu, a great gift for keeping your girl’s makeup off the screen and on her pretty face where it belongs!

Another such company from Russia, Gresso, doesn’t just turn out fantastic cell phones but also crafts mp3 players and USB flash drives made to please the eye. Using unique designs and never-before-seen textures and layouts, Gresso is a major player in the race to make functional electronics hip and trendy. Think of it as electronics aesthetics.

Biometric Password Manager/Mouse

If you’re looking for a gadget that’s easier on your wallet, take a look at this trick little hi-tech gadget. For a little less than $55 you can give your loved one a gift that’s sure to be useful; an electronic password manager so secure that it has the US military’s seal of approval. This little device can manage 50 passwords and generates password strings guaranteed to be the most secure, AND it’s a mouse! Tamper-resistant design and lockout features requiring a fingerprint make sure that those private love letters will stay private.

Need an even cheaper V-Day idea? There are some jewelry solutions on the market that will make your gadget-freak give you a kiss. Try a ring that doubles as a bottle opener or…and you’re not gonna believe this…jewelry made from computer parts (zellestyle.com)!

Whatever your choice, know that you are contributing to the Valentine’s Day revolution, where chocolate and flowers are the 8-track of romantic gifts. I mean think about it, by now, doesn’t Cupid need a burning laser gun?

…alright, so you’re afraid you’ll be in the doghouse for giving her a fingerprint scanner (because she knows it’s REALLY for you), well go ahead, then, give her the roses.

Track It! GPS Devices in the Sporting World

Posted on 29 January 2008 by admin

The Global Positioning System is a group of 24 satellite that were first put into orbit by the federal government for the U.S. Department of Defense. Originally intended to help soldiers find their way around in the battlefield, the devices were soon picked up for use in consumer products and their influence is far-reaching! First, drivers were able to get control of their poor sense of direction. Not long after, the sports world began to take notice. Here’s a few of the best (and most feature-rich) devices we found to improve your game!

Suunto T3 and GPS Pod

Track and field enthusiasts, bikers, runners, and joggers alike will love this GPS product. The Suunto Pod, which is the GPS device, clips to your arm, or straps in to a belt, pack, or bike handle. Then, its versatility shines. It tracks speed and distance while you enjoy whatever outdoor sport turns you on. If you’re into cycling or mountain biking, cross-country skiing, hiking, inline skating, or maybe kayaking, check it out.

As you are participating in the sport, the GPS device tracks your speed and training routines for later analysis. The watch/computer gives you real-time feedback on your performance. Another good thing about this particular GPS tracking device is that it also is compatible with Suunto’s T4 and T6 heart rate monitors! This is a must for the top athlete looking to improve his or her stride during their favorite sport activity.

GolfLogix GPS

Recently the USGA and R&A developed rules allowing the use of satellite-based yardage measuring devices during golf competitions. Many golfers now use these devices to increase their shot confidence, lower their scores, and generally have a better time while golfing.

This awesome device is durable and ergonomic with golf-oriented GPS capabilities. First, you head to the internet to download golf course maps, from a database of more than 15,000 golf courses. This database is being added to daily! If you can’t find the map you want, just request it and within days it will be added. You can download up to ten golf course maps on the device at one time. What’s more, because hole positions can change, the GPS device provides measurements to the front, center, and back of the green. It’s extremely user-friendly with simple instructions to navigate through the software that’s included. (note – the hardware for this unit is made by Garmin)

Garmin Wrist-Mounted GPS

This device, strapped to the wrist, is actually a heart rate monitor as well as a GPS fitness computer. Some cool features of this device are that it’s waterproof, wireless, and can alert you with time, distance, pace, and heart rate alerts.

It’s quite a bit bigger than a sports watch, and probably would lose you a few cool points if walking around town wearing it, but it delivers so many neat features! The simple button layout has good pressure response and easily walks you through the device’s interface. The display can analyze a number of factors such as: calories burned, distance, elevation, grade, and multiple lap and pace modes. There’s even a mode to set up virtual racing companions if you’re the highly competitive type. In this way, it pushes you to do your best and pits you against a virtual challenger or even your own best time from previous workouts.

With the GPS data that is collected by the device, you can connect your data to the internet and share your course, maps, workouts, and performance data with others. If you’re serious about training, this is a device definitely worth looking into!

Final note – as with all radio frequency receivers, some are better at harvesting a signal than others. And this signal comes from quite a ways away! In my experience, the larger receivers with antennas tend to hold the signal better than the smaller ones, especially the wrist-mount products. There‘s just going to be a tradeoff between convenience and function.

Hide Your Valuables In Plain Sight

Posted on 18 January 2008 by admin

When was the last time you visited a friend’s house and took a peek into the medicine cabinet just for curiosity’s sake? C’mon you know you have! “I was wondering what the name of that stinky perfume was!” But did you think, “I’ll bet he’s got a bankroll stuffed inside the shaving cream can!” Doubt it!

Decoys work extremely well…just ask a duck! These inexpensive products are called Diversion Safes. They won’t protect your cash and valuables from fire but they do an excellent job guarding against theft. Put the odds in your favor as burglars usually spend less than 10 minutes in a victim’s home and they only have time to check the most obvious places for your valuables. And according to police statistics, the shaving cream or brake fluid can are seldom targeted.

With a diversion can safe everything can be hidden in plain view. Many of these security products are re-manufactured from original containers that look like ordinary household products such as canned food, can drinks and even home household cleaners. Of course the diversion safe idea has been around for a long time (remember the hollowed out book?), but what’s cool about the new generation of products is their realism. Weighted to feel full, with a seamless screw off top or bottom, these products are very easy for a thief to overlook. Items that look like an ordinary book, wall clock, CD case, VHF Video cassette, leftover food container also work just as well as a Diversion Safes. Our favorite is a common electrical wall outlet. And if you have kids, you know they can find anything! Not anymore!

Diversion Safes are the perfect places to hide your mobile phone, credit card, car keys and house keys. Staying at a hotel without a room safe? The maid is probably not interested in your can of Cruex jock itch spray! Whether you are in your car, camping, at the beach, or away on business, use one of these handy gadgets to protect your personal items.

Never worry about being locked out of your house again. Other Diversion Safes allow you or family members to get inside a locked house by hiding a spare key inside a fake rock, outdoor thermometer or in a small fake sprinkler head.

It may not be a whole lot of comfort to walk into the house and find it ransacked, but at least your grandmother’s jewelry and the antique Rolex your dad gave you won’t be gone!

A Better And Cheaper iPhone?

Posted on 08 January 2008 by admin

A Better and Cheaper iPhone?There’s no doubt that the IPhone was on a lot of Christmas wish lists this year. The IPhone is highly innovative and much sought-after for its multimedia functionality, but the IPhone is also incredibly expensive with a $500 price tag and a required expensive monthly AT&T contract. Enter the IClone, or the IPhone Clone, also known as the CECT P168.

With the IPhone you are forced to contract with AT&T for your wireless service. If you want anywhere near 1,000 minutes, you’ll be paying over $100 per month for your service.

There is a way around both the initial price of an IPhone and the costs of the expensive AT&T plan. It’s called the IClone, The Iphone Clone or the CECT P168 (called “the real thing” by Popular Science) - and it looks amazingly identical to the IPhone and offers ALL of the features of an IPhone plus bonus, additional features like extra speakers and a removable battery, plus it allows you to use whatever participating carrier you like (even your current provider). Popular Science Magazine dubbed the IClone CECT P168 “the real thing” because the IClone CECT P168 performs amazingly well, is 1/4 the price of an iPhone and even has bonus features that the iPhone doesn’t include. (The aforementioned the ability to operate on two different networks at once, SIX speakers, and a removable, renewable battery.) Seeing both phones side by side makes the IClone CECT 168 an easy sell.

Better still, the IClone CECT P168 runs well under $200. This means you can actually get yourself, your kid or loved one all of the features of the IPhone - the touch screen, the ability to surf the web or watch videos, and the MP3 capabilities we all want, without worrying about the credit card bill coming or without having to threaten your kid’s life if they lose the IClone. Basically, anything you can do with the IPhone, you can also do with the IClone CECT P168 - AND you can remove the battery and operate on two Sim cards. Take the significant money ($400) you save and do something nice for yourself or your family.

You don’t need to buy or install any software for the IClone P168. The phone will automatically recognize your network, phone book, personal settings and phone book. Additional standard features on the CECT P168 are:

Ring tones Type: Polyphonic (64 channels), Monophonic, True Tones, MP3;

Music player: Support MP3 player, with mp3, midi, and wav format;

Movie player: Support 3GP/MP4 movie player with full-screen;

Camera function: Camera with 1.3MP, 1024*1280 pixels, video (QCIF);

Memory Type: Support T-FLASH arbitrary expansion slot (256mb TF card included);

Interface: USB;

Vibrate: Yes;

Internet Browser;

Bluetooth;

Java 2.0;

Handwriting Recognition;

Messaging: SMS, MMS;

Cell phone Directory: iPhone Book Memory supports 300 records;

Supports Caller Ringing / Caller Video Player;

Game: Two games built in + downloadable;

Calculator/world time/stopwatch;

Unit Conversion/Currency Conversion/Calendar;

Stand-by time: Up to 150h;

Talk time: 180min–300min;

and

Supports: English (Default), Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, German, Italian, French, Spanish, Arabic.

(You can get an English Manual on Ebay for about $3.00)

There are a few sketchy overseas vendors of the CECT P168, but I strongly recommend getting your IClone CECT P168 on eBay, because EBay offers pay pal fraud protection, the protection of the feedback system, and the competition on EBay ensures you get the lowest price. EBay’s feedback system allows you to actually see buyer comments about the seller so you will know how many happy customers the seller has. Nearly all of the CECT P168 feedback is positive. You can also contact previous buyers to see if they are enjoying their IClone.

If you’re not a current Ebay member, it is quick, easy and free to sign up. And unlike overseas vendors, Ebay is safe, secure and protected.

With features and specifications amazingly similar to the IPhone at under ¼ of the price, the IClone is a great way to try out the Phone’s features while waiting for the price of the IPhone to trickle down. It’s also a way to give your kids (or yourself) the technology they are hungry for at a fraction of the price.

Posted on 22 December 2007 by admin

They say great things come in small packages. This can’t be any truer than the new Zune portable multimedia player from Microsoft. This miniscule gizmo never fails to impress with its crisp audio, realistic video, FM radio, 80GB capacity, and - brace yourself - Wifi connectivity. Whether you want to listen to music or even watch Zune Movies, you can expect great things from this little gadget.

Break Through with a Cutting Edge

Watching high definition Zune Movies in such a small device is a huge breakthrough in technology, no doubt about it. But how do you know that the movies you’re downloading are the right movies?

You need cutting-edge software to download movies to Zune player. After all, you want to have the best quality movies there are, whether you’re in the mood for a Hollywood blockbuster or a smart independent flick. It’s just a matter of knowing what you want and where to look for it. With Zune Empire, you need not look any further. You’ll be surprised to know that you can indeed find everything you want in one place.

With the right software, a video download is easy enough to do. You can choose from a very wide selection of available Zune movies. With a couple of clicks on your mouse and a few taps on your keyboard, you’ll be downloading movies directly into your player in no time.

If you don’t feel like downloading movies because you’d rather use your own DVD collection, you’re still in the right place. You can simply rip your DVD movie, spectacular pictures, sound, and all.

Because the player can only play MPEG-4 videos, you can then convert this ripped DVD format into the required format with the movie converter. Furthermore, you have the option to resize and link different video files together - perfect for those TV shows and movie trilogies and quadrilogies.

Anyone Can Enjoy Zune Movies

Indeed, the right software is every techie’s dream. After all, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities for Zune Movies.

If you’re not such a gadget-freak, however, you may be less than enthusiastic and probably a little worried. Yes, you do want your movies, but you are quite overwhelmed by the Zune’s obvious technicality. Well, you’ll be pleased to know that the software is designed to be user-friendly with its easy user interface and numerous functions. Even the most technically-challenged can get things done. Besides, you’ll be supported all the way, so you’ll have those Zune movies no matter what.

Whether you’re a techie or technically-challenged, a gadget-freak or a novice, young or old, male or female, gay or straight, you’ll surely enjoy watching Zune Movies from your Zune player. You’ll never be bored again - ever.

Guitar Hero 3 Vs. Rock Band

Posted on 09 December 2007 by admin

Guitar Hero 3As everyone knows by now, Rock Band Video Game is out and taking the nation by storm. At least for those who have been able to get their hands on the game thus far. Well, the question that everyone has been dying to have answered follows. Rock Band Video Game vs Guitar Hero 3 … who wins?

MTV’s Boston-based Harmonix thrilled players of the music/rhythm genre when they first came out with their Guitar Hero game. It was so unlike anything that was then available. It was so popular that there have been two subsequent versions, with the latest version just released as Guitar Hero 3.

Well, Harmonix has now gone and outdone themselves with their latest creation, Rock Band the game. Developers wanted to not just come up with another game: they wanted to come up with a way for people to actually play music … and boy, did they!

Guitar Hero originally came with only a guitar player option, but a slew of tracks to play. It has taken this third version for Guitar Hero developers to finally get around to offering a drum kit. Something that already comes standard with every Rock Band game. Rock Band does another “one upper” by not only including the guitar; it also comes with a microphone kit.

If you were to do a side by side comparison, there are special features each of these games offer. Guitar Hero may offer more songs to shred with the guitar right now (a bit over seventy titles at last count), but Rock Band will be adding new tracks every week. Rock Band also has a better quality soundtrack than Guitar Hero and even though Rock Band video game costs a bit more, it just blows the door off Guitar Hero in overall capabilities. Its multi-player feature looks to be a bit more challenging (and fun) than Guitar Hero’s battle mode which pits a player against just the computer. There is also a Tour Mode for Rock Band being set up to run online that Guitar Hero just can’t compare with.

There was an actual “Cyber Battle of the Bands” held between both these games at this year’s EA gaming convention. The final conclusion, after a four song play-off was that Guitar Hero 3 was hard put just playing catch up to the newest contender on the video gaming block: Rock Band won, hands down!

The ultimate “Battle of the Bands” will actually be played out in the retail arena. With the upcoming holidays, it should be interesting to see if Rock Band continues to outdo Guitar Hero.
